Simple Steps to Debit Card Safety

Millions of Americans use debit cards every day to make purchases. While most of these transactions are completed without any problems, it’s smart to protect your debit card and PIN to help reduce your risk of fraud. Take a look at the following tips to help keep your debit card safe:

  • Never lend your debit card to anyone, and always keep it in a safe place.
  • When using an ATM terminal or point-of-sale terminal, use your hand or body to shield the PIN pad to prevent others from seeing you enter your PIN.
  • Do not give your account number over the phone unless you know the company and you made the call.
  • Only shop on secure websites. Look for either a “lock” icon or for the URL to begin with “https” rather than just “http.”
  • Never email account information.
  • If, by any chance, your card is lost, stolen or retained by an ATM, it's extremely important to notify your financial institution immediately. This swift action can prevent potential misuse of your card and protect your funds.
  • Regularly checking your online banking is a proactive step towards protecting your finances. Review your transactions at least once a month and, if possible, every few days. This way, you can quickly identify any errors or suspicious activity and report them to your financial institution immediately.
  • If fraudulent charges are made on your account, you must report the activity within 60 days after the statement date. After 60 days, your financial institution cannot pursue the dispute or reimburse your losses.
  • Ensure the merchant has a secure server before providing your debit card number when shopping online.

There may be times when you need to withdraw cash from an ATM. Although ATM crimes are rare, you should always be careful. These tips are a start, but the best advice is not to use an ATM if you feel uncomfortable doing so. Here are some helpful and safe tips:

  • Be aware of your surroundings, particularly at night. If you observe or sense suspicious persons, do not use the machine.
  • Before you get to the ATM, have your card in your hand and know your PIN code. Be sure to lock your car, but keep your keys handy so you can get back in quickly if necessary.
  • When waiting in line, wait well behind the person in front of you. If someone is too close to you, ask that person to step back. If the person does not, go to your car and wait until he/she leaves or go to another ATM.
  • Be careful that no one can see you enter your PIN. Use your body to "shield" the ATM keyboard as you enter your PIN.
  • Keep your information confidential, and always take your receipts with you.
  • Do not count or visually display any money you received from the ATM. Immediately put your money into your pocket or purse and count it later.
  • If you must go to the ATM after dark, go to one located inside an open business, such as a grocery store.
  • If using a drive-up ATM, be sure passenger windows are rolled up and doors are locked.
